maybe this is the year
I got 1/2 way through the hill ride tonight and turned around and went home. I had nothing and was pretty much going backwards. I've been planning a retirement from racing for the past 5 years...maybe this is it. 39 and managing the work, family, race teeter totter is just too much. I can't put the time in I need to be fast and can't put the time in to be a good dad. A wise man told me a couple months ago that you can't be fast and be a good dad.

I was wondering when I would see a post like this.
Dude, you just need to change your priorities, you don't need to give up racing.
Just focus on cross racing and buy a track bike.

Dude, get rid of the windsurfers, skis, hockey equipment, etc.
Seriously. This unfocused child-sport is a 100% total waste of time.
That could be time well spent on the family, then there's no guilt about rocking the 700c's.
Rock that special surprise I brought down to you, and CX and you'll be fine.
If you are bored with too much free time... you could get on the internet and do some things out there. They got this new thing called the google and you can find lots of things like phone numbers and businesses... it really seems like it may be the wave of the future ;)

hockey is a bonus... games don't start till 9:30pm or later. No bike or family time going on that late
skis? that just doesn't make sense....what am I going to do in the winter?
windsurfer. good for gutter ball days

shut up... you posted this several times already.
you just had a bad evening...just when you were feelin' like a racer.
however, Mr-make-us-other-fathers-jealous, you'll have to get your priorties straight or you'll miss things you'll regret.
so, yeah, listen to smithers.. priorities... cross works better for families...

I've always heard that kids enjoy cross... By Sky a cow bell and rock out your cross races, seriously, that's how they do in oHIo...
I asked my 3.5 year old, "Ian why are mommy and daddy always riding their bikes?"
His response, "Sometimes I miss you"
My heart sank into gut when he said. And every race and training ride is getting harder and harder to go to.
Maybe we should downgrade to 4's and just do crits :)

Just use the spring/summer races as training for CX and don't worry about results. You can be a super-domestique instead and/or pick a handful of races to rock, instead of trying to rock 'em all. And, don't base your decision on a bad hill ride. That ride kills everyone at some point.
Dude - you were haulin super fast with pmax when you popped last night - don't take it as a failure when maxing out makes you tired.
And don't quit - I was just gettin to know you. The first year with kids is hard - but you'll find the schedule that works for you.

it's not easy, but not impossible. Frequent shorter rides, perfect match for cross. I have found myself riding A LOT from 5-7a, at least this time of year when the early daylight allows. Also, you can just not sleep as much!
I have been wondering this year, for the 1st time ever, if I should race the Firecracker 50 solo or not. I probably will, but the immense effort with little to no reward is challenging me.
DON'T GIVE IT UP...YET!
